Look Better, Feel Better
Rhinoplasty, sometimes called a ‘nose job’, is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures. It’s not surprising – your face is the first thing people see, with your nose prominently displayed. If you are unhappy with the look of your nose and would like a more balanced appearance, Dr. Sharma will work with you to develop an approach that will not only give you the beautiful nose you long for but may also improve your breathing.
What is a Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a type of cosmetic surgery to alter the shape and appearance of the nose by sculpting the bone or cartilage. Patients undergo rhinoplasty to repair an injured or broken nose, to improve breathing issues, or because they do not like how their nose looks. With Rhinoplasty, changes to your nose can include:
· Changing the angle of the base of the nose
· Changing the size of the nose
· Smoothing out a ridge
· Straightening the bridge of the nose
· Sculpting the nose’s tip
· Narrowing the nostrils
· Improving airflow in the nose
Dr. Vijay Sharma is Board Certified otolaryngologist (ears. nose, throat surgeon) making him well-qualified to deliver exceptional rhinoplasty results for those seeking cosmetic or medical correction for breathing issues such as a deviated septum or sinus problems. Dr. Sharma also completed Facial Plastic Surgery Board Certification. His certification and extensive experience guide him in performing rhinoplasty with an eye toward aesthetics and function. By improving the appearance and function of the nose with one procedure, patients experience a ‘win-win’ experience.
Am I a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?
If your facial structure has fully developed and your nose has stopped growing, you are a candidate for rhinoplasty. Most females are eligible for rhinoplasty at around age 15, while males may need to wait a few more years. Good overall health is essential for recovery. Heavy smokers may not be good candidates due to healing issues. Rhinoplasty may not be advisable if you have a severe heart or lung condition. Dr. Sharma will review your medical history and surgical goals with you at your initial consultation to determine whether you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty.
The Rhinoplasty Procedure
Dr. Sharma performs Rhinoplasty under general anesthesia in an Accredited Outpatient Surgery Center. His technique is Open Structure Rhinoplasty, which has been shown to produce predictable and long-lasting results. Operative time is typically 90 minutes to 2 hours. Downtime for most patients is about a week of limited activity.
During Open Rhinoplasty, a small incision is made between the nostrils on the underside of the nose. This approach gives Dr. Sharma access to the nasal anatomy beneath the skin, allowing precision reshaping and modification. The open technique allows Dr. Sharma to see cartilage issues that are not readily visible in closed rhinoplasty. Open Rhinoplasty better preserves the structural integrity of the nose, which can be compromised with a closed rhinoplasty relying on limited incisions inside the nose.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty vs. Reconstructive Rhinoplasty
Dr. Sharma is adept at both cosmetic and reconstructive rhinoplasty. Cosmetic rhinoplasty focuses on changing the outward appearance of the nose for aesthetic reasons. Reconstructive rhinoplasty, or functional rhinoplasty, addresses problems that interfere with breathing, such as a deviated septum or enlarged turbinate (internal structures that may become inflamed due to allergies, sinus issues, or hormones). Dr. Sharma is skilled in both rhinoplasty forms and can often relieve patients of functional problems while enhancing their appearance.
If you don’t like the appearance of your nose, even if you have major difficulty breathing through your nose, you may be a candidate for Rhinoplasty with Dr. Sharma. Dr. Sharma’s goals for Rhinoplasty are a natural, refined look, creating facial harmony and accentuating your natural positive facial features without the appearance of a ‘done’ look.
Rhinoplasty After Care
After rhinoplasty, you will need to limit activity for at least one week to allow for excellent healing. Almost all patients tolerate their down time very well.
Please keep all follow-up appointments with Dr. Sharma so he can monitor your progress and ensure proper healing.
Expected Results
It is crucial to have realistic expectations when undergoing any surgical procedure. This is especially true of rhinoplasty. The final effect is not immediate. The results will appear over several days or weeks as the swelling fades. For some patients, occasional inflammation may be evident in the morning for several months, fading as the day progresses. In the months following rhinoplasty, you will see a gradual refinement of the look of your nose. The final results will last for your lifetime.
